About the units

Denmark is divided into "sogns" (parishes), a "sogn" being an ecclesiastical unit. About ten "sogns" are included in a "herred" (district). Today "herreds" are only interesting from a historical point of view seeing that they have not been of any importance as such for about 100 years. At the time when "herreds" were of importance, they constituted administrative and judicial groupings of parishes and at the same time subdivisions of counties. Thus each "herred" belong to a county. It should be noted that the table on this page follows the division of Denmark into counties that applied as per 1970. Today counties are divided into municipalities being local administrative units.

Background of the present list.

In 1996 DIS-Danmark published "SogneLæs for Windows Version 2.5", which is a magnificent and vital small program which is capable of making searches for parishes, districts, counties and municipalities as per 1970. The program has been drawn up by Jakob Paikin. He has the rights to the program, but it appears clearly from the attached documentation that it is permitted to work further on the actual list of parishes. That is what I have been doing on this page.
